Tony and I decided we should take a mini vacation before Christmas so we did an island hop to Maui for a few days. We squeezed in a lot of things in a few short days but it was worth it and we were able to see many things. We left our little island late in the afternoon and flew over to Maui with very little problems. Tony forgot his phone on the airplane, which he remembered right before we boarded the shuttle bus so we turned around and went back, hoping that they found it. Lucky for him they saw it in the seat and turned it in before taking off for their next island. After collecting his phone we made our way to the car rental place and were soon on our way to Kaanapali which is the side of the island we were staying on. It was about a forty minute drive. We checked into our hotel and wandered around to see what we could find for dinner. We decided that the next day we wanted to go to the top of Haleakala (a mountain in Maui). It is supposed to be one of the most beautiful places to go at sunrise. I convinced Tony that we should do it which meant we needed to go to bed early because our morning would be starting at about 3:00am. It wasn't too bad of a drive, it was just really early in the morning. Tony didn't know we were going to go to the top of the mountain but I packed our suitcase and knew it was something I would like to do so I brought the sweatshirts and sweatpants which I knew would be essential!! Yes we live in Hawaii, yes we really did need these items. Unfortunately we were not able to see a beautiful sunrise because Maui had been experiencing rain lately and that is what we found waiting for us at the top. Oh well, we tried and took pictures of our view anyways. We still made it fun!!!

On the road again
Haleakala was only a little disappointing but weather happens, maybe next time. We continued on our scenic drive for the day and continued with the road to Hana. It is a scenic drive that can be done on Maui and follows the coastline. The highway is 68 miles long but takes a while to drive because of the winding and narrow road. There are 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one-lane bridges and there are approximately 620 curves.
While driving on this scenic road we found a lava tube so we decided to go check it out!! They gave us flash lights and let us wander around freely. We read the signs are learned about what was inside of this underground cave.
From here it wasn't far to the black sand beach which would be the end of the road to Hana and it would be time to turn around and head back to the hotel.
We had a long day in the car but were able to see a lot of the island. We relaxed at the hotel for a little while before heading to a magic show for the night. The magic show was very entertaining and well done. It was a nice and relaxing way to end the day of driving. We were able to sleep in the next day and lounged around. We went on a tour called the Atlantis, which is a submarine that takes you out to look at the reef and shipwreck. It was like snorkeling but we stayed dry!!

We relaxed by the pool after our Atlantis tour and waited for it to be time for us to attend the Cirque Polynesia Show.
Needless to say, we were impressed with everything these people did and found the show to be VERY entertaining!!
On our final day in Maui we decided to go whale watching, the season just started and we were told that Maui is the best place to watch for whales because the three islands make a channel that is perfect for them to have their babies.
