Big Island

We did an island hop to visit my Uncle and his wife while they were on there annual vacation to the islands!! We got up bright and early on Saturday morning (4am) and went to the airport to be on the Big Island by 6:30am. It was a wonderful trip and we were able to see many things the island has to offer!!  For this trip we were making our way to see the volcanoes but along the way we stopped at the black sand beach to stretch our legs.  I showed Tony the black sand beach in Maui and needless to say he was sort of disappointed in it, it wasn't quite what he thought it would be.  When he walked down to the black sand on this island, he LOVED it.  He said 'now this is a black sand beach' and proceeded to take many pictures of the sand.
After the black sand beach we continued towards the volcano national park which was a lot bigger than we expected it to be. We spent time touring the observatory and learning about how the crater was formed.  It was a little windy but the steam vents kept us warm.  Im sure it was probably something close to 65 maybe 70 degrees but when you add the wind, it makes someone thats been on the islands this long cold!!
The volcano erupted back in the 1980's and blocked the road as lava rolled off into the ocean.  It was neat to walk on it and explore a little bit.
After finishing our tour of the volcanoes we stopped at the southern most tip of the United States, not many can say they have been there but we have!!
This is a picture of people fishing off of the cliffs. I found it hard to believe that they could actually catch things from here and if they did, how do they get it up the cliff? Well, today was our lucky day, someone caught a fish!!!
In about the middle of this picture you will see a person climbing down the side of the cliff so they can hook the fish and make it easier to bring it up the side. I would refuse to do this job and let the fish go every time.  You couldn't pay me enough to climb down there and if I did somehow manage to get down there I don't have a clue on how to get back up.  It made me nervous to watch him because he was climbing on this cliff, which is made up of wet rock, in flip flops!!
Here is the fish, they said it was fresh Tuna!!!
We enjoyed a nice relaxing evening at my Uncles condo and visited.  We had chicken for dinner that was cooked on the BBQ and watched the sunset.  I know, it sounds like a typical day in Hawaii. Unfortunately those that actually live here do not get to watch sunsets often and practice our hula!! This was the conclusion of our day and it was time for us to fly back to our busy little island of Oahu. Thank you for inviting us over the day and being our tour guide!!!
